Beyond the Pulpit: How One Bishop Is Challenging the Black Church to Take Health Seriously

Faith, Fitness, and the Future of a Healthier Congregation

What if the church could become one of the most powerful forces for improving the health of our communities?

For generations, the Black church has been the foundation of many African American communities. It's been a place of worship, encouragement, education, leadership, and hope. Through some of our most difficult times, the church has been there to provide spiritual guidance and support.

But here's a question I believe we need to start asking:

If we're committed to helping people become spiritually healthy, shouldn't we also be concerned about helping them become physically healthy?

That's exactly what we explored during my latest episode of the Well Beyond 50 Podcast, when I had the pleasure of sitting down with Bishop David, a pastor from New York City who is taking an intentional approach to improving the health of his congregation.

And I must say, this is a conversation I believe every pastor, church leader, and church member should hear.

A Healthy Congregation Starts With Leadership

One of the things that caught my attention about Bishop David was his decision to take action. Rather than simply encouraging his members to live healthier lives, he's helping create an environment where healthier living becomes part of the church community.

Through a private Facebook group called The Healthy Congregation, Bishop David has established a space where members can encourage one another, participate in physical activity challenges, and learn about healthier lifestyle choices. One of those initiatives is a 10,000-step walking challenge designed to encourage members to become more physically active. Now, that may sound like a simple idea, but think about the potential impact.

When a pastor encourages his congregation to move more, eat better, and take responsibility for their health, that message carries influence.

And when members begin encouraging one another, something powerful can happen.

Healthy living stops being an individual struggle and starts becoming a community effort.

That's something I believe we need much more of.

Watch My Conversation With Bishop David

I thoroughly enjoyed recording this episode of the Well Beyond 50 Podcast.

It's a conversation about much more than walking 10,000 steps or making healthier food choices. It's about leadership, It's about community, It's about personal responsibility.

And most importantly, it's about recognizing that our physical well-being deserves attention alongside our spiritual well-being.

Whether you're a pastor, church leader, ministry volunteer, or simply someone who cares about the health of your community, I encourage you to watch this conversation.

And after watching, I'd love for you to consider one question:

What would happen if your church decided that helping its members become healthier was part of its mission?

Perhaps it's time to find out.
