Given 18 Months to Live...Then Everything Changed

There are moments in life that change everything.
Sometimes they come in the form of devastating news from a doctor. Other times, they come from a simple message posted by an old friend.
On today's episode of The Well Beyond 50 Podcast, I had the privilege of sitting down with someone I've known since our junior high school days at Mendenhall Junior High School—my longtime friend, John Price.
John's story is one that deserves to be heard.
Just over a year ago, John walked out of his cardiologist's office carrying news that no one ever wants to hear. He had been diagnosed with heart failure (HFpEF). At more than 300 pounds, his blood pressure was dangerously high. His A1c levels indicated serious metabolic problems, his cholesterol was elevated, and his physician painted a grim picture.
Statistically, John was told he had approximately 18 months before suffering a catastrophic cardiac event.
Imagine hearing those words. For many people, that diagnosis would have become the end of the story. Thankfully, for John, it became the beginning of a new one.
Like anyone facing overwhelming news, John admits he felt defeated. For weeks, he struggled emotionally and wondered if there was even a point in trying.
Then something unexpected happened.
While scrolling through social media, he came across a simple post from someone he hadn't seen in years—that kid he had met back in 1980 at Mendenhall Junior High. That kid was me. The message wasn't complicated.
It simply said:
"Just get up and get moving."
That was enough.
John decided to take one small step.
He started walking. At first, walking three-quarters of a mile felt almost impossible. He couldn't even make it halfway down the street without stopping to catch his breath. But he kept showing up.
One walk became another.
Then another.
One day turned into one week.
One week became one month.
One month became one year.
Today?
John regularly walks 7 to 10 miles in a single day.
Over the past 13 months, he has:
Lost over 100 pounds
Lowered his blood pressure to 115/66
Reduced his weight from more than 300 pounds to 217 pounds
Improved his blood sugar dramatically
Eliminated nine prescription medications
Regained energy, confidence, and hope for the future
His life has been transformed.
Perhaps the most powerful part of John's story isn't just the weight he lost.
It's what he gained.
He gained belief.
He gained purpose.
He gained years that once seemed like they were slipping away.
During our conversation, we talked about something many people need to hear:
You don't have to be perfect.
You don't have to run marathons.
You don't have to completely overhaul your life overnight.
Sometimes the biggest transformation begins with the smallest action.
Just get up.
Just start moving.
One healthy meal.
One walk.
One better decision.
Then repeat it tomorrow.

John's journey is proof that your past does not determine your future.

Just get up and get moving.
You never know where that first step might lead.
